Torres Jaime I
[T_JI]
0.00EUR

The Torres family surname has been linked with wine for more than three centuries, during which time our ancestors have worked vineyards in Penedès, a land with a millenarian tradition of wine.

Our family has been dedicated to working the land, passing on their commitment from generation to generation.

Some years went by before we actually began trading with our wine. Our commercial activity began in 1800, with a horse-drawn carriage used to transport our wine in wooden barrels.

It was when Jaime Torres Vendrell returned from Cuba that the Torres family began its domestic and international expansion. Jaime Torres, after more than 10 years of hard work and saving, arrived at the idea of exporting his wines to countries such as Cuba, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

In 1870, Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell form the Torres & Company association, and work begins on building the first winery in Vilafranca del Penedès.

Our wines gained great prestige wherever the intrepid Catalan sea captains of Sitges and Vilanova transported them. Cartagena de Indias, Santiago de Cuba, Veracruz, Bremen, Hamburg and Saint Petersburg were some of these destinations. These wines won prizes in Vienna, Philadelphia and Paris.

The dynamic spirit of the Torres family made them dedicate their efforts not just to making wine, but also to distilling brandies. Right from the beginning, distilling brandy played an important role and Juan Torres Casals became a great promoter of brandy in 1928.

Torres's world-wide expansion is due to the tenacity and boldness of Miguel Torres Carbó. He never forgot his beginnings, when he would be seen carrying bottles of his wine in his arms and offering them to the best restaurants and merchants of his era.

The Spanish Civil War created a big crisis at Torres. In 1939 our winery was bombed. It took the determined efforts of Miguel Torres Carbó, with the notable help of his wife, Doña Margarita, to rebuild it following this disaster.

The Heirs of Miguel Torres Carbó

Since then, the gains made by the Torres family throughout the world have grown and become consolidated. In 1979 a winery was opened in the Central Valley of Chile (Curicó), where a great range of wines is made in a truly privileged land, totally free of the Phylloxera blight, given that the whole country of Chile has never been affected by it.

Ever since San Francisco became Marimar Torres's home in 1975 she dreamed of having a vineyard in California. At the beginning of the '80s her father agreed and, following years of searching, Russian River / Green Valley, in Sonoma County, was selected. There she makes elegant wines such as her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Our family, generation after generation, has transmitted the secrets of winemaking and love of the land. This tradition, allied with a vision of the future, have turned Torres into a great exporting company currently trading in more than 120 countries.

Torres Jaime I

THE CREATIVE SPIRIT

In the 18th century, the Torres family bought their first vineyard in the Penedès region. A century later, in 1870, the House of Torres, producer and exporter of wines was founded by Jaime Torres Vendrell. It was at this time that great works. The Casa Milá, known as "La Pedrera" is the most representative building of that intensively creative period of modernism in Barcelona. In homage to the figure of Gaudí and of the innovative spirit of those men whose philosophy of a "job well done" was passed from father to son, the House of Torres created this old noblesse brandy which carries the founder’s name. La Pedrera belongs to La Caixa de Catalunya and the bottle was designed by the architect Tanaka. The Jaime I brandy has been made with very old ‘soleras’ aged from selected distilled white wines. Some of the soleras started off as distilled Parellada wines destined for our Torres 10 brandy, and
which have been kept aside for many years to create a valuable reserve stock.
These old reserves have been enriched with our best soleras, the oldest being 30 years old. Finally, to complement the aromatic intensity of these brandies with lighter fruity and floral notes, we have added a small amount of 1972 eau-de-vie of Folle Blanche lees, the rarest and noblest of grapes, used to make the highest quality pot still brandies

Tasting Notes

Jaime I is deep, rich and dark amber in colour. It displays a concentrated complex bouquet, with marked overtones of coconut, dried fruits and spices, typical of lengthy ageing. Round and lush, it has the smoothness that characterises great brandies. Jaime I is complex, majestic, with a lingering finish that leaves a velvety imprint on the palate.
